What does a solidary city mean for us today?
Contemporary crises concern as much insensitivity to nature and insensitivity to each other. The challenge of modern cities is not only to respond to a climate catastrophe, but also to social problems and inequalities, and these threads should not be treated separately. Our assumption is that none of us is self-sufficient. We are inscribed in the circle of dependence, the laws of nature, social relations, mutual care and public services based on a social contract. In this context, we understand solidarity as mutual support. As an exchange of care, in which we do not divide individuals into the stronger ones, who provide care, and the weaker ones, who only receive help. In our opinion, a solidary city is an organism and a place that empowers. Inclusive, intersectional and sensitive space designed together, which endeavours to respond to ecological and social demands at the same time.
With whom and with what should we be solidary?
During the 10th edition of DoFA, we ask: who is she, he and it we should take care of? What are their needs and what diverse groups they represent? Who is the city designed for, and whose needs does it ignore? The holistically understood call to solidarity is a pretext for discussing the refugee crisis, social inequalities and non-human city users.
We will look at the existing solutions in the context of supporting care work, creating municipal policies and bottom-up initiatives for meeting places and mutual support. We will consider feminist threads of space design and the flexibility of buildings in terms of transforming their functions. We will try to answer the question of what tools architects have at their disposal in the face of crises.
